The Upper Rhondda Brass Band is a relatively 'new band' and consists in the main of young musicians.  Many of the players started their  'banding careers' with two other well known junior bands in this area, both previously conducted by Wyndham Williams. Although successful on the solo and quartet circuit, it soon became clear that the commitment and talent of the emergent young players demanded a greater forum to showcase their successes. Developing a separate, independent youth band provided these young people with the opportunity to progress and become firmly established as a competing fourth section band which has become well known and respected on the circuit.

Inevitably players have come and gone since the early days and some of those who played such a significant part in the beginning now play for championship bands, but a small core of the original players still remain under the ever present baton of Wyndham Williams!  The band has gone from strength to strength in the last few years and enjoyed considerable success within the fourth section whilst many players have retained their interest in solo and quartet performances also.  In particular, players from  Upper Rhondda regularly 'sweep the board' at the annual solo and quartet contest in Bideford in Devon where they usually enter every category and come away with most of the prizes!

The Band is not just about competing however, and probably much of its success can be attributed to the way in which it runs as an organisation promoting inclusion and opportunity at every level.  There are range of ages and abilities and a successful transition process from the junior to senior section enabling young people to 'move on' and encouraging practice to secure 'promotion'.  There are always plenty of fund raising activities and social events to get involved in for parents, grandparents and friends and the band is well supported at contests and concerts.  Check our events page regularly to chart our progress and note forthcoming dates for your diaries!
