Upper Rhondda Brass Band History
Wyndham Williams is the conductor and tutor of the senior and junior sections of
the Upper Rhondda Brass Band. Wyndham began his playing career with Cory Junior Band,
aged just ten and was tutored on the trombone by Don Tanner. By the age of sixteen
he had progressed to the Lewis Merthyr Band and under the guidance of Mr Ieuan Morgan
and Mr Oliver Jones, he occupied the prestigious solo trombone position. Wyndham
remained in this band for twenty years before retiring for a well earned rest from
the banding scene! However, his retirement was not to last and after eleven years,
he was coaxed back into the business to take up the solo trombone position in Treherbert
Silver Band to help them out for a 'one off ' area contest. He was persuaded to
stay for another ten years before he commenced on the latter part of his career,
moving into tutoring. Wyndham took over the role of tutor to Treherbert Junior Band
and under his guidance, many young players went on to become the Upper Rhondda Brass
Band. He still remains at the helm and despite having now passed 'official' retirement
age, shows no signs of letting up!
